This program is offered partially online with clinicals in local health facilities through a partnership with the EPIC (Educational Programs in Collaboration) program.

• About the MRI Technology Degree

  Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) technology is a fast-growing field that needs workers who are capable of understanding human anatomy and magnetic imaging and performing MRI procedures with accuracy and care. This program will equip you with all the skills and knowledge you need to excel in the field and enjoy a steady career. 

  After completing pre-reqs and being accepted into the MRI program, you’ll begin with an introduction to the field, learning about the history and future of medical imaging, exploring human anatomy as seen from multiple planes and on MR and CT imaging, and preparing for clinical experiences. 

  After mastering these foundational principles, you’ll move on to studies of MRI physics, procedures, and pathophysiology, exploring such things as the properties of atoms and interactions within the magnetic field, pulse sequencing, scan parameters, imagining techniques of central nervous system and musculoskeletal system. You’ll also learn about the software used on the job; image data management and manipulation; patient records, safety, and regulations; quality control procedures; and image post-processing.

  Beginning in your second semester of the program, you’ll be placed in clinical sites where you will gain experience working in a real MRI center and applying the principles you’re learning in your courses. 

  You’ll cap off your program with a course designed to prepare you to take the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT)’s MRI certification exam.

• How the Program Works

  This program is offered in conjunction with the partnership with the Educational Programs in Collaboration (EPiC) program. After completing pre-requisite courses at SMC, you can apply to the MRI program through which you’ll complete online courses specific to MRI technology. After completing all courses successfully, you will graduate with an Associate in Applied Science in MRI Technology from SMC and will be eligible to take the MRI certification exam administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT). 

  SMC courses may be offered during the day or in the evening. EPiC courses are fully online, with clinicals completed at local MRI centers.

  SMC courses are billed at SMC’s tuition rate. EPiC courses are billed at a different rate, which is based on credit hours, not contact hours. There is also a flat rate course fee for each course in the program. In 2023-24, the EPiC program tuition rate is $204 per credit hour with a $206 flat rate fee per course.

     Complete the MRI and EEG Application Packet and return it to the nursing office.

• What Can I Do With a MRI Technology Degree?

  MRI and radiologic technicians perform MRIs, which use magnetic fields and radio waves to produce images of the inside of the human body. These images are sent to doctors who use them to diagnose diseases and injuries. 

  In conducting an MRI, technicians may explain the procedure to patients, prepare and position them correctly while taking care to accommodate their affliction, operate the MRI machine, and record the images for physicians to interpret. They may work in hospitals, physicians offices, or imaging centers.
